Five European nations have stated that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a lethal toxin and have attributed the attack to the Russian state.
Alexei Navalny Poisoning Confirmed
Analysis of samples taken from Navalny, who died in February 2024, “have conclusively confirmed the presence of epibatidine,” according to a joint statement from the foreign ministries of the UK, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. Epibatidine is a toxin found in poison dart frogs native to South America.
The statement asserts that “only the Russian state had the combined means, motive and disregard for international law” to carry out the poisoning. The countries are reporting Russia to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for violating the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Navalny, a prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin and a leader of anti-Kremlin protests, was serving a 19-year sentence he maintained was politically motivated.

Last year, Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, stated that independent labs had detected traces of poison in her husband shortly before his death. She has repeatedly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of responsibility for her husband’s death, allegations Russian officials have denied.
Following the release of the joint statement, Navalnaya said on social media she had been “certain from the first day” that her husband was poisoned, “but now there is proof.”
Russian authorities maintain that Navalny became ill after a walk and died of natural causes.
