NBA Sets Deadline for Kawhi Leonard Investigation
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has stated that the league’s ongoing investigation into Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers must be concluded before the start of the new season. The inquiry, which is being conducted by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, has reached its 11th month, leaving the future of the star forward in limbo.
The investigation, which began in September following reports regarding a $28 million endorsement contract between Leonard and the now-bankrupt company Aspiration, has expanded significantly in scope. While the league initially focused on whether the Clippers circumvented the NBA salary cap by facilitating the sponsorship deal, sources indicate the firm is now examining whether the Clippers improperly covered expenses for Leonard without reimbursement. Additionally, investigators are looking into a potentially unreported endorsement deal between Leonard and a separate, unnamed company.

Trade Stalled Amid Risk Assessment
The investigation has directly impacted league transactions, most notably a high-profile trade that would have sent Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors. Although the Raptors and Clippers reached an agreement on June 30, the trade remains on hold. According to the Raptors, the NBA informed the team that if they proceed with the acquisition, they would assume the risk of any punishment resulting from the investigation.
While the Raptors remain interested in re-acquiring the seven-time All-Star, they have elected to wait for a resolution. Commissioner Silver clarified that the league did not formally block the trade, noting that the teams involved chose to pause the deal themselves. The proposed trade package included Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round draft picks, two second-round picks, and pick swaps.
Aspiration Deal Under Scrutiny
Central to the probe is Leonard’s $28 million contract with Aspiration, a carbon credits company that later filed for bankruptcy. Despite the lucrative nature of the deal, Leonard never appeared in any public marketing campaigns for the company. Former Aspiration employees noted that Leonard’s detached public profile and limited social media presence made him an unconventional choice for a spokesperson.
While some former employees reported that Aspiration made authentic, albeit unsuccessful, attempts to market Leonard—including a scrapped campaign that would have featured the player in a concept similar to Marvel’s “Groot”—others have questioned the intent behind the agreement. Aspiration co-founder Joe Sanberg, who was recently sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for wire fraud, has spoken with league investigators.
Clippers Deny Wrongdoing
The Los Angeles Clippers and owner Steve Ballmer have maintained their innocence throughout the process. Ballmer has stated that he was a victim of fraud regarding his company’s relationship with Aspiration. In a statement, the Clippers asserted they have fully cooperated with the league by participating in dozens of interviews and providing tens of thousands of documents. The team stated they expect the trade to be finalized once the investigation reaches its conclusion.

The National Basketball Players Association has expressed frustration with the duration of the process. Executive director David Kelly stated that the matter should not take this long to conclude, while team executives around the league are increasingly speculating that the Clippers could face disciplinary action. The NBA has declined to provide further comment as the inquiry continues.
