Nigel Farage unveiled his new Reform UK frontbench team, a group described by observers as a collection of “rejects, losers and deadbeats.” The presentation, held at Church House in Westminster, was largely dominated by Farage himself, with his appointees receiving limited time for introductions.
Farage Dominates Reform UK Team Announcement
Farage presented the team as possessing “energy, experience and expertise,” though critics questioned whether his first appointment, Richard Tice, met those criteria. Tice was assigned the role of business, trade and energy secretary, a position Farage emphasized was “very, very important,” seemingly to reassure Tice, who reportedly hoped to be shadow chancellor.
Sources indicate Tice appeared disheartened by the demotion, having previously led Reform UK before Farage’s return. He attempted to project enthusiasm, outlining plans for 4% economic growth and deregulation, but even Farage appeared skeptical of some proposals, including a national sovereign wealth fund.
Jenrick and Yusuf Appointed to Key Roles
Robert Jenrick, a recent defector from the Conservative party, was named shadow chancellor. He quickly attempted to reframe recent history, suggesting the country’s current problems stemmed from the past 18 months of Labour government, and downplayed his role in previous Conservative administrations.
Zia Yusuf was appointed shadow home secretary. He is known for his hardline stance on immigration and immediately criticized Jenrick’s previous performance as immigration minister. Yusuf’s focus is primarily on increasing deportations.
Braverman Assigned Limited Role
Suella Braverman, also a recent Conservative defector, was assigned the role of shadow education, skills and equalities minister, a position seen as a significant demotion. She indicated she would abolish the equalities aspect of the role immediately, and expressed a dismissive view of higher education.
Farage repeatedly asserted control throughout the press conference, interrupting questions directed at his team members and reinforcing his central role within the party. He also reportedly ridiculed female journalists for asking questions he deemed inappropriate.
