Nintendo has confirmed it has no immediate plans to abandon physical media for its hardware, contrasting sharply with Sony’s upcoming transition to a disc-less PlayStation lineup by January 2028.
Nintendo Switch 2 Maintains Dual Digital and Physical Capabilities
The current hardware generation from Nintendo supports both physical cartridges and digital software, allowing buyers to pick their preferred format. Bill van Zyll explained the brand’s philosophy during the YouTube interview:
“Historically, we’ve been very agnostic, right? We go off of what the consumer prefers, and take that into account very heavily. We also have a platform that just launched. We’re barely just over a year into NS2. And it’s got both digital, but it also has physical, that capability. There’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well, so our position has been to be agnostic.”

Some games sold in physical packaging arrive as key cards rather than traditional containing cartridges, prompting mixed reactions from consumers who encounter code-in-a-box formats.

Industry Contrast with Sony and Microsoft Console Strategies
Nintendo’s current stance arrives against a backdrop of sweeping industry changes regarding physical formats. Sony announced that it plans to halt sales of physical games for the PlayStation 5 and subsequent consoles in January 2028. That decision triggered a consumer backlash and a temporary boycott of Sony services in August. While developers such as Hideo Kojima and CD Projekt Red have weighed in on Sony’s directive, competitors face renewed scrutiny over their own hardware roadmaps.
Although Nintendo’s leadership acknowledges strong consumer demand for physical games on the current generation, van Zyll’s comments remain tied specifically to the NS2. This leaves open the question of whether a hypothetical third-generation console will retain a physical game slot.
