The crackdown took place from Friday afternoon, April 17, through Sunday morning, April 19. Officers targeted several hotspots to remove illegal weapons and narcotics from the streets.

Weapon Seizures in Tsakani and Edenpark

Tsakani served as a primary focus for the operation. On Friday, police raided a residence in Dubazane, Extension 11, where they arrested a man in possession of a Norinco pistol and two live rounds.

On Saturday afternoon, officers acted on a tip-off regarding a drug dealer in the same area. The raid resulted in the seizure of buckets of dagga and another unlicensed firearm.

In Edenpark, police engaged in a high-speed foot chase on Friday night after spotting a suspicious 30-year-old man. Upon tackling the suspect, officers recovered a “baby brown” pistol and one live round.

Operation Shanela Results

Parallel to street patrols, detectives conducted Operation Shanela to locate wanted suspects. This specific effort led to the arrest of 139 targets.

The arrests included 79 individuals for contact crimes, 19 for gender-based violence, and six for property crimes. An additional 51 suspects were detained for other serious offenses.

Other arrests made over the weekend involved charges of drunk driving, carrying dangerous weapons, and being illegal immigrants.

Ekurhuleni district police commissioner Major-General Anna Sithole praised the teams involved in the operation.

“The efforts paid off in achieving successful outcomes and ensuring the safety of citizens,” Sithole said.
