A person was injured in a shooting Tuesday involving U.S. Border Patrol in Arizona, approximately 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, officials said.
The individual, whose identity has not been released, was shot in southern Pima County near milepost 15 of West Arivaca Road around 7:30 a.m., according to the Santa Rita Fire District. The department transported the person to a regional trauma center in critical condition.
Investigation Underway
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is assisting the FBI in an investigation into the shooting involving a Border Patrol agent in Arivaca, an unincorporated community about 9 miles north of the border. The sheriff’s department is also leading a parallel investigation into the use of force.
The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Crews from the Santa Rita Fire District and American Medical Response provided medical care at the scene. “Patient care was transferred to a local medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center,” the fire department said. “The incident remains under active investigation by law enforcement agencies.”
An FBI spokesperson confirmed the individual was taken into custody and stated that the investigation is ongoing, with no further information being released at this time.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department explained that it is standard practice to become involved when a federal agent is involved in a shooting incident within the county. “We ask the community to remain patient and understanding as this investigation moves forward,” the department said in a statement. “PCSD will thoroughly examine all aspects of the incident, however, these investigations are complex and require time.”
This shooting occurred three days after Border Patrol fatally shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis and weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Good, also in Minneapolis. These shootings have sparked protests and criticism of the Department of Homeland Security, including calls for the firing of Secretary Kristi Noem.
House Democrats Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar released a statement accusing the Trump administration of using taxpayer dollars “to kill American citizens” and threatened to begin impeachment proceedings for Noem if she isn’t fired. President Donald Trump responded by stating Noem would not step down.
Trump also mentioned that border czar Tom Homan was in Minnesota meeting with local officials.
Federal immigration officers have shot 12 people since September as the DHS has increased deportation operations nationwide.
