Vaud and Valais Lift Heatwave Alerts as Storms Bring Cooler Temperatures

The cantons of Vaud and Valais have officially lifted their heatwave alert protocols following a period of intense summer heat. The decision, announced on Thursday, follows a shift in meteorological conditions that has brought cooler temperatures and increased storm activity across the region.

End of Heatwave Protocols

In the canton of Valais, the Public Health Service announced the termination of level 3 of the heatwave plan via the AlertSwiss application at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. Simultaneously, the canton of Vaud confirmed that its own heatwave plans for municipalities and socio-sanitary institutions concluded later that same afternoon. The transition comes as a result of improved weather forecasts. The intense storm activity, which began affecting the region on Wednesday, is expected to continue through Friday. These conditions are keeping maximum temperatures significantly lower than those recorded during the peak of the heatwave. Officials anticipate a gradual return to seasonal temperature averages by the beginning of next week.

Health Vigilance Remains Essential

Despite the official end of the alert status, health authorities in both cantons emphasize that caution remains necessary. Officials warned that the physiological effects of prolonged heat exposure can manifest with a significant delay, particularly among vulnerable populations. Specific groups identified as being at higher risk include: * The elderly * Individuals suffering from chronic illnesses * People who are socially isolated or otherwise physically fragile Health departments recommend that residents continue to prioritize hydration, maintain cooling measures, and remain observant for any unusual symptoms. In cases of doubt or mild discomfort, citizens are advised to contact their primary physician or the on-call medical service. For life-threatening emergencies, the public is instructed to call 144.

Storm Impact Across the Region

The change in weather was triggered by strong storms that swept through French-speaking Switzerland beginning Wednesday afternoon. MétéoSuisse had initially issued a level 3 out of 4 storm warning, which remained in effect until early Thursday morning. The storm activity resulted in localized damage, particularly within the canton of Vaud. The Vaud Cantonal Police reported several incidents, including: * Fallen Trees: Obstructions were reported in Aubonne and St-Prex, requiring clearing operations. * Injuries: One individual in Noville sustained minor injuries due to a falling tree and required a hospital check-up. * Infrastructure: A power cable was brought down in Etoy, and metal roofing panels were dislodged onto the road in Montreux, though no injuries were reported in these specific incidents. While the immediate intensity of the weather warning has been downgraded, MétéoSuisse indicates that the potential for further perturbations remains possible as the region experiences a more active storm cycle than what was observed earlier this summer.

Workplace Protection Framework

As the region adjusts to variable summer weather, the Valais authorities have also implemented a new surveillance system to protect outdoor workers. The Service for the Protection of Workers and Labor Relations (SPT) has installed 32 meteorological probes across the canton to monitor conditions in real-time. Under this framework, when critical thresholds—defined by a combination of dry temperature, relative humidity, radiation, and wind—are exceeded for at least one hour, intense physical labor in direct sunlight without shade is strongly discouraged between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The canton retains the authority to issue formal prohibitions if health protection requirements are not met. Companies are encouraged to mitigate risks by adjusting work schedules to start as early as 5:30 a.m. or by relocating operations to unaffected zones.
