Pakistani human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari and her husband, Shahbaz Tariq, have been sentenced to 17 years in prison for posts made on social media, according to reports. The pair were convicted on charges related to inciting sedition and harming state institutions.

Social Media Posts Lead to Lengthy Sentences

Mazari and Tariq were arrested earlier this week following a hearing regarding their social media activity. The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) initially sent them to 14-day judicial remand, and the subsequent sentencing was handed down on Friday.

The court also imposed a fine of 72 million Pakistani Rupees (approximately $240,000 USD) on both individuals. The charges stem from posts deemed critical of the Pakistani military and state institutions.

During a court appearance via video link, Imaan Mazari alleged mistreatment while in custody. Details of the alleged mistreatment were not immediately available.

The case has drawn criticism from human rights advocates who view the convictions as a suppression of free speech and a crackdown on dissent. The sentences are currently being reviewed by legal teams.

As of today, Mazari and Tariq remain in custody, and plans for appeal are underway.
