Palestinian Pastor Urges Christians Against Zionism

A Palestinian pastor and director of the Bethlehem Institute for Peace and Justice, Rev. Munther Isaac, has called on Christians worldwide to reject Zionism, arguing it is incompatible with Christian teachings.

Rejection of Zionism

Speaking at an inter-faith lecture at the Gatesville Mosque in Cape Town on Friday, Isaac stated that Palestine is the birthplace of Christianity. He emphasized that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, and crucified and resurrected in Jerusalem, with the first Christian community established in Al-Quds, Jerusalem.

Isaac asserted that the conflict in Gaza is not religious in nature, but rather a project of settler colonialism. He challenged the compatibility of Zionism with Christian values, pointing to what he described as its “fruits”: settler colonialism, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, military occupation, and genocide in Gaza.

“Christian Zionism must be judged by the fruits of Zionism,” Isaac said. “Are colonialism, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide, compatible with the teachings of Jesus? For sure not and by the way many Jewish voices protest these crimes and say not in our name, not in the name of the Jewish faith and the numbers are increasing all over the world.”

Isaac noted that more than 50,000 Palestinian Christians have been displaced since the Nakbah.

Imam Shaykh Abduragman Alexander of the Gatesville Mosque offered prayers for the oppressed people of Palestine, Gaza, Sudan, Kashmir, and around the world, and for divine intervention against oppressors and tyrants.

This marked Isaac’s second address to the Gatesville Mosque congregation during an inter-faith lecture.
