Parmigiani Fleurier has expanded its mysterious complications
collection with the launch of the Tonda PF Chronographe Mystérieux, a monopusher chronograph designed to remain visually indistinguishable from a standard three-hand watch until activated. Unveiled during the brand’s 30th-anniversary celebrations at Watches & Wonders 2026, the timepiece represents the third iteration in a series of watches dedicated to hidden complications, following the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante (2022) and the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante (2023), according to Revolutionwatch.
Mechanical Innovation and The “Mysterious” Display
The Chronographe Mystérieux utilizes a proprietary movement, the calibre PF053, which features 362 components. Unlike traditional chronographs that rely on fragmented sub-dials, this movement allows the chronograph to perform measurements across the entire dial. When the complication is inactive, the dial maintains a clean aesthetic featuring a grain d’orge guilloché pattern, applied 18k gold indices, and openworked gold delta hands, as noted by Monochrome Watches.
The transformation is triggered by a monopusher—positioned at 7:30 on the case—which controls the start, stop, and reset functions. Upon the first press, a set of rhodium-plated hands, which are normally secreted beneath the timekeeping hands, fly back to zero to begin timing intervals up to 12 hours. Simultaneously, the rose gold hour and minute hands remain visible to track civil time. A second press stops the measurement, while a third press causes the rhodium-plated hands to reset and reunite with the rose gold hands, effectively “vanishing” from the dial, according to Watchesbysjx.
Design and Specifications
The watch is housed in a 40mm stainless steel case featuring a coin-edged platinum bezel, measuring 13mm in thickness with a 100-metre water-resistance rating. The case design incorporates polished lug hoods that transition into a thin bevel along the caseband. While the movement was widely speculated to be an in-house product of Vaucher, Parmigiani Fleurier confirmed that the cal. PF053 was developed by an unnamed third-party specialist to achieve the specific kinematic requirements of the disappearing display, as reported by Watchesbysjx.
Development and Market Positioning
Parmigiani Fleurier has introduced two versions of the watch at launch:
- Steel Version: Features a mineral blue dial and is priced at CHF 32,000.
- Platinum Version: A limited edition featuring a frosted, bare platinum dial, priced at CHF 99,600.
According to Watchesbysjx, the use of an external specialist for the movement contributed to the relatively accessible pricing of the steel model compared to other high-complication chronographs currently on the market.
Practical Application and Philosophy
The brand describes these watches as examples of private luxury,
emphasizing objects designed for the wearer’s personal pleasure rather than for public display.
