A person died Wednesday following a water-related incident at Okitū Beach in Gisborne, New Zealand. Surf lifeguards responded to a distress call and initiated CPR, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Okitū Beach Water-Related Fatality
Wainui Surf Life Saving Club lifeguards were alerted to a person in distress at the northern end of Okitū Beach near Makorori Pt around 11:40 a.m. local time.
Lifeguards deployed an inflatable rescue boat, supported by the Gisborne SAR squad, to locate the person. They found the individual had been pulled from the water and onto rocks.
While lifeguards performed CPR, the rescue boat returned to shore to transport ambulance staff and police to the location. Despite their efforts, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand expressed its condolences to the victim’s family and friends and offered support services to the lifeguards involved. This incident marks the third water-related death in New Zealand in three days, with a fourth person currently missing.
