Pete Hegseth Grilled by Lawmakers on Iran War Strategy

Democrat Seth Moulton challenged officials Hegseth and Caine during a hearing on whether the United States is winning the Iran war, questioning the strategic value of recent military actions and their cost to taxpayers.

When asked if he advised the president to launch attacks on Iran, Hegseth stated that the president “got every perspective possible.” He shifted the focus to nuclear proliferation, asking the committee to imagine the state of the world if Iran possessed a nuclear bomb.

Hegseth asserted that the U.S. is “absolutely” winning the conflict, describing recent developments on the battlefield as an “astounding military success.”

Strategic Challenges in the Iran War

Moulton questioned whether the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz constitutes a victory, comparing the cycle of blockades to a game of “tag, you’re it.” He asked Caine if the military had planned for this specific progression of events.

Caine responded that the U.S. military “always offer a full range of military options” and that those options are “carefully considered.”

The hearing also addressed the economic impact of the conflict, with Moulton stating that the cost to the average American taxpayer is approximately $600.

Hegseth maintained that the war “won’t go on for years,” countering the economic concern by asking what the cost would be if Iran acquired a nuclear weapon.
