Colombian President Gustavo Petro discussed drug trafficking and rebel groups during a live radio interview Friday, vowing to combat the National Liberation Army (ELN) and proposing joint efforts with the U.S. and Ecuador to disrupt drug trafficking organizations.
Petro Addresses Security Concerns and Venezuela
The interview, conducted with Caracol, a Colombian news outlet, largely focused on security issues and Colombia’s 1,367-mile (2,200km) border with Venezuela. A significant portion of that border is controlled by the ELN, a Colombian guerrilla group.
Petro reiterated his commitment to combating the ELN, a pledge anticipated ahead of his current visit. He also highlighted his government’s initiatives to fight drug trafficking and coca cultivation.
Drug Trafficking and International Cooperation
Petro stated that drug trafficking is shifting south towards Ecuador, attributing this to awareness from former U.S. President Donald Trump. He proposed a collaborative effort between the U.S. and Ecuador to dismantle drug trafficking operations in the region.
According to Petro, he has also shared intelligence with authorities indicating that Colombian drug traffickers are residing in other countries, including the United States.
