Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has declined to attend a hearing at the International Criminal Court (ICC) related to investigations into the country’s “war on drugs,” citing health reasons. Duterte has also reiterated his rejection of the ICC’s jurisdiction over him and the Philippines.
Duterte Declines ICC Hearing
Duterte stated he is “frail” and will not participate in the hearing, according to reports. The ICC is investigating alleged crimes against humanity committed during his administration’s drug war, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of individuals.
The ICC rejected Duterte’s appeal arguing he was unfit to stand trial, paving the way for the proceedings to continue. He maintains his innocence and has consistently criticized the ICC investigation as a violation of Philippine sovereignty.
Senator Leila de Lima, a vocal critic of Duterte, asserted that his decision to skip the hearing indicates he is of sound mind and capable of defending himself. De Lima has been a long-time opponent of Duterte and his policies.
Meanwhile, groups representing victims of the drug war and their supporters are establishing anti-troll networks in anticipation of the ICC proceedings. These networks aim to counter disinformation and provide support to victims and their families.
Duterte previously withdrew the Philippines from the ICC in 2019, but the court maintains jurisdiction over crimes committed while the country was a member.
