The Pittsburgh Pirates swept the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game series, entering the All-Star break with a 50-47 record. The surge, highlighted by a 14-5 victory featuring a 10-run inning, marks Pittsburgh’s best record at the break since 2016 and keeps the team within two games of a playoff spot.

The Pirates entered the final stretch before the All-Star break facing the National League Central-leading Brewers, a series that tested the depth of a roster currently navigating significant injuries. Despite being without center fielder Oneil Cruz, Spencer Horwitz, shortstop Konnor Griffin, and catcher Endy Rodríguez, Pittsburgh secured a pair of one-run wins in a Saturday doubleheader before completing the sweep with a 14-5 rout on Sunday, according to reporting from Pittsburgh Baseball Now.

The series finale featured a rare offensive explosion. In the fourth inning alone, the Pirates scored 10 runs, a feat that saw all nine starters reached base and contributed to the rally. WPXI reports that, per the Elias Sports Bureau, this performance marked the first time in franchise history the team has recorded two 10-run innings in a single season. The offensive output was widespread; all nine starters recorded at least one hit and one run, while eight of the nine drove in at least one run.

Paul Skenes and the Rotation’s Outlook

Starting pitcher Paul Skenes, who earned his second consecutive win on Sunday, noted the change in support he has received from the offense recently. After a period last year where he struggled to gain run support, the team has scored 26 runs in his last two outings. Audacy’s 93.7 The Fan noted that Skenes worked through 5 1/3 innings and 82 pitches during Sunday’s finale, maintaining a lead that was bolstered by Henry Davis’s second-inning home run.

“We are in a good spot, kind of wish we didn’t have an All-Star Break at this point because we are playing good baseball. I’m super-confident in our ability to show up after the break. It’s been fun to be a part of. So we’ll keep it rolling. A lot of baseball left to play. It’s going to be a fun year.”

Skenes, who is the fourth MLB pitcher to start his career with three consecutive All-Star selections, according to MLB, characterized the series finale as a “suffocating” effort against the division leaders. While Skenes plans to take two days off during the break, he expressed optimism regarding the team’s momentum heading into the second half of the season.

Depth and Second-Half Stakes

The success of the weekend was not limited to the starting rotation or the top of the lineup. Veteran Ryan O’Hearn highlighted the contributions from the bottom of the order, specifically noting that hitters in the 7-9 spots—Marcell Ozuna, Jared Triolo, and Henry Davis—combined for seven hits and seven RBIs on Sunday.

“I just think it’s quality up and down the lineup. There’s good hitters 7-9. You don’t see that on a lot of teams. Also, the depth — we’ve got four guys who are regulars who are hurt right now. Just speaks to the depth, guys getting a chance and taking advantage of it. It’s pretty cool.”

As the team enters the break, they find themselves 9.5 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central but firmly in the mix for a Wild Card spot. The 50-47 record represents the club’s strongest standing at the break since 2016. For players like Brandon Lowe, who experienced a World Series run with Tampa Bay in 2020, the focus remains on the current quality of play rather than the immediate standings.

“I think it showed everybody in here that this is a legit team on both sides of the ball,” Lowe said. With the All-Star break now underway, the Pirates face the challenge of carrying this offensive production and bullpen stability into a second-half schedule that will determine their postseason eligibility.
