New Delhi – Narendra Modi has reached the milestone of being the longest-serving head of government in India, surpassing former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, a feat acknowledged by members of the governing National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Modi’s Tenure and Recognition
Home Minister Amit Shah described Modi’s achievement as a rare legacy built on unprecedented trust and unparalleled service. Modi has held the position for 25 years, beginning his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister in October 2001 before becoming Prime Minister in May 2014.
Chamling previously held the record with 8,930 days in office from December 1994 to May 2019.
Three Consecutive Lok Sabha Victories
Prime Minister Modi is the only leader after Jawaharlal Nehru to secure three successive Lok Sabha victories, leading his alliance to win in as many general elections.
Shah stated that Modi’s milestone is rooted in service, hard work, and unwavering commitment, reflecting a dedication to nation-first governance and tireless service to citizens. He added that Modi’s decades of service have transformed India, improving the lives of the poor, setting new development landmarks, and enhancing the nation’s global standing.
Shah also noted that Modi has not taken a holiday in over 24 years, demonstrating his commitment. “This explains the unprecedented affection he received from people, three times as Gujarat CM and three times as India’s PM. People’s trust, affection and support for him have only grown with every passing day,” he said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Modi’s devotion to the nation and its people is unwavering, highlighting a continuous journey of service from his time as Gujarat’s Chief Minister to his leadership as Prime Minister.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, a TDP leader, called it an extraordinary achievement reflecting Modi’s dedication, visionary leadership, and commitment to the country’s progress. He stated Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047 continues to inspire and guide India toward a brighter future.
