Pokémon Creator Professor Rex Hunts Shiny Golduck Using 58 Consoles

Pokémon content creator Professor Rex has assembled a massive 58-console rig featuring 25 Wiis and 33 GameCubes to hunt for an extremely rare level 25 Shiny Golduck in the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Safari Zone, a mammoth endeavor with calculated odds of one in nine million.

Shiny hunting has long been a badge of honor among dedicated fans in the Pokémon community, but one veteran player is taking the grind to a staggering scale. Rather than relying on patience and a single handheld system, content creator Professor Rex has wired together dozens of retro consoles to hunt for an elusive, pink-billed duck that possesses some of the most punishing math in third-generation Pokémon history.

The 58-Console Rig and Wavebird Controller Setup

Managing dozens of consoles simultaneously sounds like a logistical nightmare, but Rex solved the problem using hardware from the early 2000s.

Once the game boots up on a system, the disc can actually be removed and inserted into the next console while the previous session keeps running. Input synchronization is handled by the classic Wavebird wireless GameCube controller released by Nintendo in 2002.

“Unlike modern wireless controllers, the Wavebird communicates with radio waves – so if all of the receivers are set to the same radio channel – they can all send inputs to whatever system they are plugged into…That allows for pretty-well unlimited scaling of how many systems we can control at once.”

Calculating One-in-Nine-Million Odds in the Hoenn Safari Zone

The target of this marathon effort is not a legendary Pokémon or a starter, but a Golduck found exclusively while surfing in the northwestern section of the Hoenn Safari Zone in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. While Psyduck normally evolves into Golduck at level 33, the Safari Zone can spawn wild Golducks as low as level 25.

The mathematics behind the encounter stack multiple rare probabilities together. Multiplying these variables together yields the staggering one-in-nine-million calculation.

The High Stakes of Safari Week and Running Away

Adding to the tension is the unique environment of the hunt. Unlike standard grass encounters where players can weaken a target with attacks, the Safari Zone forbids traditional battles.

If the coveted shiny Golduck finally appears, it carries a 15 percent chance to flee on any given turn after a failed action, while a standard Safari Ball has only about a 12.33 percent catch rate according to data cited by Dexerto. This means a hunter can endure millions of encounters, secure the shiny, and still watch it run away immediately.

Current Progress and Charitable Milestones

Despite running the massive 58-console array across multiple years of Safari Week events, the elusive target has yet to appear. Because shiny hunting odds reset with every single encounter, past phases do not bring him any closer mathematically to the goal.

Even so, the streaming effort has driven community engagement and fundraising.
