Police kept busy during annual Whangamatā Beach Hop

Police arrested 30 people for fighting and disorderly behavior during the annual Beach Hop car event in Whangamatā, a considerably higher number than in recent years. Tens of thousands attended the event on the Coromandel Peninsula, and officers responded to anti-social behavior as the evening progressed.

Beach Hop Sees Increased Arrests

Eastern Waikato area commander Inspector Mike Henwood said the event itself was well-run and enjoyed by most participants. “This is an enjoyable event, which is so important for the local economy, and it was run really well with participants and attendees having a great time, and mostly behaving themselves,” he said.

However, Henwood noted that some attendees caused issues for police later in the night. Thirty arrests were made for fighting in a public place and disorderly behavior, and approximately 40 liquor ban infringement notices were issued.

While the number of people ignoring the existing liquor ban was similar to previous years, the total number of arrests was significantly higher, according to Henwood. “It is extremely disappointing that the behaviour of some people required us to make arrests, issue tickets and deal with drink drivers,” he stated. An increased police presence, including foot patrols and checkpoints, was anticipated and deployed.

More than 3000 drivers were breath-tested over the weekend, resulting in 11 exceeding the legal breath alcohol limit.

Police encourage attendees to enjoy events safely and lawfully.
