Police did not investigate messages and a voicemail from an acquaintance of Valdo Calocane, a triple killer, according to testimony at an inquiry.
Calocane Acquaintance’s Messages Unexamined
The inquiry heard that text messages and a voicemail from a man known as Mr. Monteiro to Calocane were reviewed by police.
Mr. Monteiro and Calocane communicated via text message in Portuguese.
Investigators recorded that the messages contained “nothing significant regarding the investigation,” and characterized them as “actions of a loner and a man evicted from a property who was looking for a place to stay.”
In a voicemail, Mr. Monteiro expressed concern about Calocane taking his house key and potentially getting “in trouble” with a neighbor.
Mr. Monteiro stated in the voicemail: “If this turns into a police case bro, I’m going to hand you over. I won’t lie to you.” He also said, “I trusted you at my home man, I trusted you at my home and you took my key and left with it.”
Investigators admitted that Mr. Monteiro was never questioned about the content of the voicemail.
