A man is dead after he aimed a bow and arrow at police officers in Gunnedah, New South Wales, on Friday, January 16. The incident occurred after officers responded to a welfare check at a home on Quia Road.

Man Shot Dead After Aiming Bow and Arrow at Police

Police were called to an address on Quia Road in Gunnedah, about 450km north-west of Sydney, at around 1:40 p.m. on Friday, January 16, to perform a welfare check.

Officers spoke to the man outside the home before he went inside and returned armed with a bow and arrow. Police say he then aimed the weapon at officers, prompting a response.

According to a New South Wales Police press release, officers retreated to their vehicle for cover. A police firearm was discharged, and despite efforts to save him, the man died at the scene.

A NSW police spokesperson said a critical incident investigation has commenced. Officers attached to Oxley Police District initially attended the scene.

“Officers attached to Oxley Police District attended and spoke to a man outside a home before the man went back inside and returned armed with a bow and arrow,” the spokesperson stated.

“Police returned to their vehicle for cover; however, a police firearm was discharged when the man aimed at officers. The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a gunshot wound but he died at the scene.”

The investigation will be led by a critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command, with oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
