Pope Leo XIV has stated that he regrets remarks regarding “tyrants” were interpreted as a response to criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, insisting he has no interest in debating the American leader.

Pope Leo XIV Clarifies Remarks on Tyrants

The Pope told journalists while traveling to Angola that the remarks were written well before President Trump’s comments regarding the pontiff and his message of peace.

He noted that much of the subsequent coverage has been “commentary on commentary” attempting to interpret his words. The Pope added that a “certain narrative” surrounding the exchange has not been accurate in all aspects.

The specific comments regarding “tyrants” ransacking the world were delivered on Thursday in Bamenda, Cameroon. The city serves as the epicenter of a decade-long English-speaking separatist insurgency that has killed thousands.

Trump Criticizes Pontiff’s Foreign Policy

President Trump previously stated on April 12 that he was “not a big fan of Pope Leo.”

In a post on Truth Social, the U.S. leader accused the Pope of “toying with a country (Iran) that wants a nuclear weapon,” stating he does not want a Pope who thinks such a situation is acceptable.

Trump further described Pope Leo as “WEAK on Crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.”
