President Prabowo Subianto has directed the acceleration of waste-to-energy management initiatives in major Indonesian cities, aiming to address longstanding waste issues and bolster national energy security.
Waste-to-Energy Program Expansion
The directive came during a meeting with Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, who also heads the Danantara Investment Management Agency, along with other members of the Red and White Cabinet at Prabowo’s residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday.
Rosan Roeslani reported on the progress of the waste-to-energy program, with a particular focus on large, densely populated cities including Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan, and Bali, according to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
The waste-to-energy program is viewed as a strategic solution to Indonesia’s unresolved waste problem and will contribute to the provision of sustainable, alternative energy sources.
President Prabowo emphasized the need for swift and integrated action from the central government to tackle waste management issues across the regions. He expressed his hope that accumulated waste can be promptly cleared and repurposed as an energy source, specifically for electricity generation.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to developing a modern, technology-driven waste management system and strengthening national energy security through the utilization of environmentally friendly domestic resources.
The waste-to-energy program is expected to yield both environmental benefits and new economic opportunities, including job creation, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for Indonesian cities.
