President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a potential visa-free travel scheme and expanded cooperation across multiple sectors during a meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow on Wednesday. The leaders also addressed Indonesia’s ambitions in nuclear power and offered condolences for recent disasters in Sumatra.
Expanding Indonesia-Russia Relations
During the bilateral meeting, Prabowo and Putin explored cooperation in energy, industry, agriculture, research, science, and technology transfer, according to Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Putin also raised the possibility of humanitarian and tourism cooperation, supported by direct flights and a potential visa-free policy.
Putin highlighted potential cooperation between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union, praising Indonesia’s full BRICS membership and raising the prospect of a free trade agreement between the two entities.
Support for Indonesia’s Development
Putin voiced Russia’s support for Indonesia’s plan to develop nuclear power plants and pledged assistance for broader industrial development. “If Indonesia decides to involve Russia, we are always ready to help,” Putin stated.
Russia sees numerous opportunities for joint projects with Indonesia, particularly in manufacturing and agriculture, Putin added.
Condolences and Future Visit
Putin offered condolences for the Nov. 25 flash floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, which resulted in nearly 1,000 deaths and left hundreds missing. Prabowo responded, stating, “Thank you, we have managed the situation well.”
Prabowo extended an invitation to Putin to visit Indonesia, which the Russian leader accepted, saying, “Thank you. I will certainly come, with great pleasure.”
Prabowo was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Putin was joined by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and senior Russian officials. Following the Moscow visit, Prabowo is expected to return to Indonesia and travel to Sumatra to inspect disaster-response efforts and lead a coordination meeting.
