QR Codes for Bus Tickets: Easing Peak Congestion 🚌

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 3 — All online ticketing agents in Malaysia are now required to use the QR code system for interstate bus tickets, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today, in an effort to reduce congestion during peak travel seasons.

Mandatory QR Code System for Bus Tickets

The announcement comes ahead of the Lunar New Year and Aidilfitri celebrations later this month and in late March, two of the country’s largest cultural and religious observances.

“Starting February all OTA must use the QR code, so all tickets bought starting this month should integrate the QR code so you don’t need to change tickets again when you arrive at the terminal,” Loke told reporters following an inspection of the Bandar Tasik Selatan bus terminal (TBS).

The directive addresses passenger complaints regarding the need to obtain a second boarding pass at TBS despite having already purchased tickets online, a process that previously caused congestion and departure delays.

“This problem was something that got our attention and I’m happy to state that bus operators had assured us the matter had been resolved,” Loke said.

Passengers who purchased tickets prior to the new rule can obtain new QR code-integrated tickets online through the TBS website. The terminal operator charges agents RM1 per QR code, generating additional income for TBS.

“Why are we using QR codes? They act like a boarding pass. The terminal is like an airport that has its own lanes and doors. TBS also charges RM1 per QR code, so it provides income…now I hope we don’t see long lines anymore,” the minister said.

TBS Amenities Under Review

Loke also inspected the condition of amenities at the TBS terminal following complaints of poor upkeep.

After meeting with TBS executives, Loke toured the terminal and spoke with passengers regarding their experiences with the services provided.

“We asked the operator to improve the amenities and facilities. I know from a few months back there were many complaints about the dysfunctional escalators, elevators, toilets in poor state and all that,” Loke said. “So, all these fundamental issues must be rectified, that’s what I told them.”
