A resident doctor from Nagaland, working at AIIMS Gorakhpur, was allegedly subjected to racial slurs, stalking, and physical assault by three men on Sunday evening, February 22, 2026. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed concerns regarding the safety of medical professionals and discrimination against people from the Northeast.

AIIMS Gorakhpur Doctor Assaulted

The incident occurred around 8 pm as the obstetrics and gynaecology resident was walking towards Gate No. 2 near the Army camp, according to police.

Authorities state the accused followed her for approximately 1.5 kilometers before confronting her near the institute gates. In her complaint, the doctor alleged the men made obscene remarks and used racial slurs targeting her northeastern origin.

The doctor reported that one of the men removed his shirt in an attempt to intimidate her, and another allegedly touched her inappropriately. She raised an alarm, prompting the three men to flee the scene.

Kaustubh, Senior Superintendent of Police in Gorakhpur, confirmed a case has been registered at the AIIMS police station under relevant sections of law, but did not specify the exact provisions included in the FIR. CCTV footage has been used to identify a motorcycle linked to the accused, and four police teams have been formed to locate them.

The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs (NAFORD) highlighted the incident on social media, alleging that the doctor was subjected to racially discriminatory comments and physical assault. According to NAFORD, one of the men slapped the doctor on the buttocks near the army camp at Gate No. 2.

Nagaland CM Demands Action

Nagaland Chief Minister Conrad Sangma strongly condemned the incident, calling it “deeply shameful” and urging authorities to take firm action. He emphasized that racial discrimination and sexual harassment against women from the North East should not be repeatedly sensationalized and then forgotten.

Sangma stated, “The racial and sexual abuse of a resident Doctor of AIIMS Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh from Nagaland is deeply shameful. Outraging a woman’s modesty is not what a civilized nation should tolerate. They are your sisters and daughters too. Urge the authorities to take stringent actions against the perpetrators.”

Police are currently working to identify and arrest the accused, with further action to be taken based on the ongoing investigation.
