An RCMP-led corruption investigation is underway involving at least one current and one former Calgary city councillor, as well as a local business, following the execution of search warrants last week.
RCMP Investigation Targets Calgary City Councillors
Details of the investigation come from multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, who have been granted anonymity as they are not authorized to comment publicly. Several search warrants and production orders were executed, including one targeting a local business.
Ward 10 Coun. Andre Chabot’s cellphone was seized during the warrant executions, sources say. Warrants were also executed for property belonging to former Ward 4 Coun. Sean Chu.
“My client has been cooperative throughout and respects the legal process,” said Chu’s lawyer, Shamsher Kothari, in a written statement. “No charges have been laid and I look forward to a swift conclusion of this investigation.”
The investigation reportedly relates to allegations of corruption involving a business. No charges have been filed at this time.
Chabot confirmed to reporters outside council chambers on Tuesday that the RCMP seized his phone last Thursday, but stated he is unaware of the investigation’s focus. “I was asked to provide my devices for them to look at to gather evidence,” he said. “That’s about as much as I know … I’m hoping that somehow it will result in something that they can utilize.”
Chabot added that he was not questioned and does not believe he is under investigation. “I’m fully complying, I have nothing to hide,” he said. He also stated he was not contacted by the RCMP prior to the warrant execution.
Mayor Jeromy Farkas has not been contacted by police and declined to provide further comment.
Defence lawyer Alain Hepner confirmed he has been retained to represent Chabot. “He has nothing to hide and is fully co-operating with the authorities,” Hepner said in a brief statement.
The Calgary Police Service received a related complaint in October 2025 but subsequently handed the investigation over to the RCMP, according to spokesperson Emma Poole. “To protect the integrity and confidentiality of the ongoing investigative process, no further details will be released at this time,” Poole stated.
RCMP spokesperson Fraser Logan said the investigation is being handled by its Federal Policing Northwest Region unit, which specializes in sensitive cases involving politicians. A media spokesperson for RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region confirmed the “ongoing investigation relating to a referral we received from Calgary Police Services in October 2025.”
“To protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”
