The 25-year-old Australian infielder spent his early big-league career with the Tampa Bay Rays before getting traded to the Chicago White Sox at the previous summer’s deadline. In 87 games with Washington this year, Mead has slashed .254/.352/.500 with 17 doubles, 17 home runs, and 48 RBIs, earning a 134 wRC+. Unlike many high-strikeout sluggers, Mead has refined his plate discipline significantly under the Nationals’ new regime. He limits swing-and-miss tendencies, ranking in the 76th percentile with a 25.4 percent chase rate and an 17.9 percent whiff rate that puts him in the 83rd percentile, leading to a sub-20 percent strikeout rate and an 11.5 percent walk rate.
