A man who attacked his baby daughter, causing catastrophic injuries, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison. Rhydian Lynne Rhys Jamieson, 28, previously admitted to throwing the child at a television.

Baby Injured in Attack

Jamieson threw his daughter at a TV, resulting in a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, extensive cuts, and bruising, according to Swansea Crown Court. He then left the baby alone under a duvet and sent text messages to the child’s mother, including apologies and statements expressing fear he had killed someone and would be featured in news reports.

The attack occurred at a property in Y Ferwig, Ceredigion. Jamieson, known as Rhys, “snapped” before the assault, the court heard. The child will require lifelong care and support.

The baby’s mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, delivered a victim impact statement saying, “You’re nothing but a spiteful, disgusting person.” She added, “The impact on my child will last for the rest of my life. I’ll never understand what you were thinking. It doesn’t matter how long you’ll get because it will never be enough.”

Despite a previous attempt to vacate his plea, Judge Paul Thomas KC refused permission, calling Jamieson “a coward” who was “consumed by self-pity.” The judge stated Jamieson threw the baby with great force and showed “the most horrendous callousness and self-interest,” noting he did not check if the baby was alive.

“The child has irreversible brain damage. You have no remorse, no regret, for what you did,” the judge said.

Carl Harris, of the children’s charity NSPCC Cymru, described the case as “a truly shocking case of cruelty and violence inflicted on a baby by her father” who should have been protecting her. He added that Jamieson’s attack will necessitate lifelong care and support for his daughter.

Jamieson will be eligible for release after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
