RIGA — Municipal enterprises in the Latvian capital have suspended the application of late payment penalties and restricted debt collection activities until June 30. The measure provides financial relief for residents with overdue bills for essential utility services and house maintenance. The suspension follows a directive issued in January by Riga’s Executive Director, Janis Lange, who urged municipal providers to halt the imposition of penalties and interest. The suspension applies to the following enterprises:

  • SIA “Rīgas namu pārvaldnieks”
  • SIA “Rīgas ūdens”
  • JSC “Rīgas siltums”
  • SIA “Rīgas nami”

### Scope of Utility Relief Residents will not incur penalties or interest for overdue payments related to water, sewage, and heating bills for services provided through the end of May. The relief too extends to house maintenance costs. In addition to halting new penalties, the municipality has suspended the growth of interest and penalties that had already accumulated on accounts prior to this period. ### Debt Collection and Legal Restrictions The city has implemented a freeze on legal actions and third-party collections for a specific window of the current year. New debts resulting from bills issued between January 1 and June 30 will not be sent to court or transferred to collection agencies during this timeframe. ### Repayment and Financial Assistance For residents unable to settle their balances in full, the municipality is offering flexible recovery options. Individuals experiencing payment difficulties may negotiate individual repayment schedules with service providers. These schedules can extend for up to six months and remain available even after the June 30 deadline. Housing assistance is available for residents with low incomes to support manage utility costs.
