Sigourney Weaver Hints at New ‘Alien’ Film with Original Writer, Discusses Ripley’s Future

A potential return to the terrifying universe of Alien is gaining momentum, with Sigourney Weaver revealing discussions with Disney regarding reprising her iconic role as Ellen Ripley. The prospect isn’t just a nostalgic revisit; it’s a collaboration with a key figure from the franchise’s origins, promising a distinctly different take on the sci-fi horror saga.

A New Chapter for Ripley?

During an Alien reunion panel at New York Comic Con, Weaver disclosed a meeting with representatives from Disney – the current owner of the Alien property – about a possible continuation of Ripley’s story. However, the real excitement stems from her collaboration with Walter Hill, the producer of Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking 1979 film. Hill has reportedly developed 50 pages of material outlining a compelling future for the character.

“Walter Hill is a very good friend of mine and he wrote 50 pages of where Ripley would be now and they are quite extraordinary,” Weaver told EW. “So I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox – Disney, or whoever it is now.”

This potential project marks a significant shift from previous attempts to revive the franchise. Weaver had previously expressed disinterest in revisiting the role, except for a proposed sequel from director Neil Blomkamp. However, Hill’s vision appears to have reignited her enthusiasm.

“Except for Neil, I’ve never felt the need to reprise the role. I was always like, ‘Let her rest! Let her recover!’” Weaver explained. “But what Walter has written is so…first of all, [it] seems so true to me. It’s very much about the society that would incarcerate someone who has tried to help mankind, but she’s a problem to them so she’s tucked away.”

The proposed storyline suggests a darker, more psychologically complex narrative, a departure from the action-oriented sequences often associated with the series. Weaver emphasized that this new installment would be far removed from the claustrophobic corridors of the Nostromo. “It would not be running around air shafts. It would be a very different kind of Alien with a really good script. Scary,” she stated.

The alien itself will, of course, feature in Hill’s concept. “It’s inevitable, but I love what he’s done with the character,” Weaver added. “He really gets her strength and her anger and her humor, and it’s very hard to write. It’s surprisingly hard to write Ripley. Everybody makes you sound like a gym teacher. ‘All right, people, let’s do business!’ So Walter has it.”

Weaver recently lauded FX’s Alien: Earth series, praising its exploration of core themes within the Alien universe. “It exploded some of the themes that have always been part of the Alien series, and I think it’s beautifully cast and beautifully done,” she commented.

What does it mean for the future of the franchise to explore Ripley’s story through the lens of societal ostracization? Could this approach offer a fresh perspective on the themes of xenophobia and corporate greed that have always been central to Alien?

The enduring appeal of Alien lies in its ability to tap into primal fears. Britannica’s overview of the franchise highlights the series’ influence on the science fiction and horror genres. Could Walter Hill’s vision recapture that initial sense of dread and wonder?
