Two men have been charged with manslaughter following an alleged assault in Hobart’s Elizabeth Street Mall that left a 66-year-old man dead. The incident occurred on Saturday, and the victim has been identified by family as Ian Street.
Hobart Mall Manslaughter Investigation
Police responded to reports of a disturbance in the mall on Saturday afternoon. A 66-year-old man was allegedly assaulted and later died from his injuries. Two men were subsequently taken into custody.
The two men, aged 28 and 31, faced Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday charged with manslaughter. Their names have not been publicly released.
Family members have paid tribute to Ian Street, describing him as a “gentle soul.” His daughter, in a statement, said the loss has left her “ripping my heart out.” Friends also remembered Street as a kind and friendly man.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
