Western Australia Premier Roger Cook is relocating from his home in Wellard to West Perth, citing the lengthy commute to Parliament House as a key factor. Cook informed Kwinana Labor branch members on Saturday that he and his wife, Carly Lane, are making the move to dedicate more time to his role and less time traveling.
Freeway Congestion Cited as Reason for Move
Cook emphasized his commitment to serving as Premier beyond the next election, stating the move is necessary to maintain the energy and commitment he believes the position deserves. He explained that reducing travel time would allow him to spend more time in the community.
Kwinana Freeway, known for its congestion, particularly south of Russell Road where it narrows to two lanes, is undergoing a $700 million widening project expected to begin later this year. The upgrade aims to improve traffic flow with an additional lane in each direction and new ramp signals.
Cook confirmed that Wellard remains their home and they intend to rent out the property. He reiterated his commitment to representing the Kwinana community, assuring residents that his electorate office and team will continue to provide support.
Western Australian state MPs are not required to reside within their electorates. Cook’s emphasis on his Kwinana roots during the 2021 election campaign, frequently identifying as “a dad from Kwinana,” mirrors a similar approach taken by his predecessor, Mark McGowan, who also relocated from his Rockingham home due to safety concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.
