Rubio: US & Europe’s Shared Interests & Future

The United States remains committed to its alliance with Europe and desires the region’s success, according to remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday.

U.S. Support for Europe

“We care deeply about your future and ours,” Rubio told attendees at the Munich Security Conference. “We want Europe to be strong. We believe that Europe must survive, because the two great wars of the last century serve, for us, as history’s great reminder, that ultimately, our destiny is, and will always be, intertwined with yours.”

The comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump has frequently voiced criticism of Europe’s reliance on the U.S. for security, and has urged NATO allies to increase defense spending.

Rubio stated that international cooperation and global institutions do not need to be abandoned, but rather reformed and rebuilt. “We do not need to abandon the system of international cooperation we authored, and we don’t need to dismantle the global institutions of the old order that together we built. But these must be reformed. These must be rebuilt,” he said.
