Saketh Vemula: A Tragic Loss for IIT Madras and UC Berkeley

Vemula was pursuing his master’s degree at UC Berkeley. The Berkeley Scanner first reported the discovery, and the news has prompted an outpouring of grief from both the university and his alma mater, IIT Madras.

IIT Madras issued an emotional tribute, stating that Saketh’s work “continues to impact” the institution. The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation.

A friend of Vemula’s, speaking to The Hindu, recalled their final conversation, noting that Saketh had been eating and engaging less over the past two weeks. The friend did not elaborate on the reasons for this change in behavior.

Vemula’s parents have requested to collect his body themselves, according to NDTV. Arrangements are being made to facilitate their request.

The Times of India reported that Vemula’s journey to the United States represented a pursuit of the “American dream,” which tragically ended in his death. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
