Samsung Shifts Strategy to Wide Galaxy Z Fold8 to Counter Apple Entry

Samsung Pivots Strategy with New Wide Galaxy Z Fold8

Samsung Electronics is reorienting its foldable smartphone strategy to compete with the anticipated entry of Apple into the market. Central to this shift is the introduction of the Galaxy Z Fold8, a “passport-type” foldable featuring a 4:3 aspect ratio, which the company expects to become the highest-volume model in its 2026 lineup.

This volume exceeds the 2 million units planned for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and the 1.5 million units for the Galaxy Z Flip. Industry sources indicate that demand for the 4:3 form factor is expected to outpace the company’s conventional 18:20 aspect ratio models.

Design and Hardware Specifications

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is designed with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Samsung describes the 4:3 aspect ratio as a book-like form factor intended to improve one-handed comfort and reduce content cropping during web browsing or photo viewing. Under the hood, the device is expected to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite 5th Gen processor and up to 1TB of storage, with a suggested price point of approximately US$1,899.

Simultaneously, Samsung is rebranding its existing, narrower foldable as the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. This model is expected to adopt a 3:2 aspect ratio, a 200MP main camera system, and a 5,000mAh battery. It is projected to retail for approximately US$2,099.

Innovations in Durability and Display

To address long-standing concerns regarding foldable hardware, Samsung has announced the use of “Flex Titanium” technology for the Galaxy Z Fold8 series.

Innovations in Durability and Display

Samsung states this process allows for a slimmer display panel—nearly one-third the thickness of a human hair—while reducing crease visibility. By using advanced hole-processing technology to eliminate air gaps between the module and the adhesive, the company aims to enhance the durability of the internal folding screen against external shocks.

Market Stakes and the Apple Factor

The strategic move to a 4:3 aspect ratio aligns with industry expectations surrounding Apple’s first foldable smartphone, which is rumored for a September debut. Reports suggest the foldable iPhone may also utilize a 4:3 aspect ratio, with a 7.58-inch inner display and a 5.35-inch outer screen.

Analysts view this transition as a pivotal moment for the foldable segment. While Samsung has historically dominated the market, TrendForce estimates that Apple’s entry could capture nearly 20% of the market share in 2026, potentially compressing the shares held by Samsung and Huawei to approximately 30% each. Theverge reports that industry analysts, such as IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo, predict Apple’s arrival could serve as a turning point that elevates foldables from a niche interest to a mainstream hardware category.

Samsung’s total production target for its Galaxy Z foldable smartphones in 2026 is estimated at 5.5 to 6 million units. By preemptively adopting a form factor similar to that expected from Apple, Samsung aims to mitigate the risk of losing market dominance while maintaining its existing Flip and Fold designs to serve established consumer preferences.
