Samsung Unveils Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 8

Samsung Electronics signaled a strategic pivot in its mobile hardware strategy this week, unveiling three new foldable devices at a launch event in London. The move comes as the South Korean technology giant braces for increased competition, with Apple expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone as early as this September.

Samsung Expands Foldable Lineup Amid Rising Competition

Samsung has officially expanded its foldable smartphone lineup with the July 23, 2026, launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. All three devices are scheduled to ship on August 7.

Redesigning the Foldable Experience

The company is positioning the new lineup to cater to distinct user needs, ranging from entertainment-focused displays to traditional productivity designs. The Galaxy Z Fold 8, which starts at $1,900, represents the most significant design shift. It opens like a children’s book or a passport, revealing a wider main landscape display with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Drew Blackard, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product management, noted that the redesign was driven by evolving user habits, stating, Media consumption has really changed a lot since the first one we launched in 2019.

Ultra Productivity and Flip Nostalgia

In contrast, the $2,100 Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra maintains the narrower, more vertical shape of previous Samsung foldable designs. This model is marketed as a productivity-focused device and includes a “ginormous” battery upgrade. Finally, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, which folds vertically like early 2000s-era flip phones, starts at $1,200.

Navigating Higher Component Costs

The pricing for the new models reflects a broader trend in consumer electronics. Blackard confirmed that the Fold 8 Ultra and the Flip 8 are each $100 more expensive than their predecessors. He identified the rising costs of RAM and storage as a “big driver” of these price increases, describing the current market environment as the big challenge right now.

Despite these hikes, Blackard suggested that many U.S. consumers might not experience the full impact of the price changes, as mobile carriers are expected to launch deals and other methods to offset the costs within billing cycles.

Preparing for the Cupertino Challenge

These releases arrive as Samsung faces its most significant competitive threat in the category. Samsung has spent the last seven years betting on the viability of phones that expand into tablets. While Apple is expected to enter the foldable market this fall, Blackard emphasized Samsung’s long-standing head start in refining design, durability, and functionality.

Regarding the potential arrival of an Apple foldable, Blackard remarked, They’ll probably have one form factor, and we’re excited to be offering three now.

The introduction of the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 is particularly notable as industry rumors suggest Apple’s first foldable device may adopt a similar shape. As the market prepares for potential competition from Cupertino, Samsung’s current strategy is to offer a specialized device for every use case: one Fold for watching video, another for productivity, and a Flip for users seeking a nostalgic, classic form factor.
