Santa Monica Studio has officially confirmed that a new God of War game featuring Kratos is currently in development. Head of creative Cory Barlog announced the project during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. According to Barlog, this upcoming installment will follow the release of the studio’s next title, God of War Laufey, and will connect directly to the events and story established within that game.
Santa Monica Studio Confirms New Kratos-Led Title
While the studio has confirmed the project’s existence, no specific details regarding the title, setting, or target platform have been released. Similarly, there is currently no indication of when this Kratos-led adventure will be available to players.
Relationship to God of War Laufey
The new project is distinct from the previously announced God of War Trilogy Remake, which remains in the early stages of development. Instead, the upcoming Kratos story is designed as a direct narrative continuation that follows the events of God of War Laufey.

God of War Laufey, which is scheduled for release on February 16, 2027, centers on Kratos’ late wife, Laufey—also known as Faye—as she traverses the afterlife of the gods. The game features a “reluctant hero” narrative and includes a companion character named Phranque, played by Jack Quaid. The development team, led by director Ariel Lawrence and creative head Cory Barlog, has described the game as an expansion of the franchise’s world, aimed at exploring a broader tapestry of characters.
Future of the Franchise
The confirmation of a new Kratos-led title arrives amid ongoing fan discussion regarding the future of the series’ long-time protagonist. Following the initial reveal of God of War Laufey, which stars Faye rather than Kratos, Santa Monica Studio issued multiple clarifications to reassure fans that Kratos remains the figurehead of the franchise.

In an interview uploaded to PlayStation’s YouTube channel, Barlog emphasized that there’s always going to be Kratos games
throughout the series’ history. This sentiment was echoed by director Ariel Lawrence, who stated, We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.
The studio’s official X account further reinforced this position, stating, Kratos is the God of War – we have many more stories to tell with him.
Context and Development
The franchise’s current roadmap includes three distinct areas of focus:
- God of War Laufey: Starring Faye, this title explores the afterlife of the gods and launches February 16, 2027.
- God of War Trilogy Remake: An announced project currently in its early stages that will revisit the original Greek trilogy.
- The Next Kratos-Led Adventure: A newly confirmed project that will follow the events of God of War Laufey and move the franchise into the future.
While Kratos appears briefly in the reveal trailer for God of War Laufey—a segment that depicts him aiding Faye during a period of imprisonment—his primary role in the franchise continues to be a central priority for the developers. As the studio prepares for the 2027 launch of Laufey, it continues to emphasize that its creative expansion into new protagonists is intended to complement, rather than replace, the ongoing narrative arc of Kratos.
