Background and Career of General Birame Diop

General Birame Diop brings extensive experience in international security and defense to his new role. A career military officer, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Senegalese Armed Forces in 2020. His domestic service also includes roles as the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic. Most recently, he served as the Minister of the Armed Forces under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a position he held from 2024 until his departure from the government in June 2026, according to RFI.

Beyond his national military career, General Diop has significant international experience within the United Nations system. From 2021 to 2024, he acted as a military advisor to the UN Department of Peace Operations. Earlier in his career, he served as deputy chief of air operations in Bunia, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, during the UN peacekeeping mission known as MONUSCO. These countries are currently grappling with severe terrorist threats that risk expanding into coastal regions.
