Four suspects have been arrested in connection with a series of robberies across KwaZulu-Natal following a coordinated operation involving Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team and Richards Bay SAPS. The suspects are accused of targeting members of the public, particularly at fuel stations and fast-food restaurants, by distracting them and stealing their cellphones.
Robbery Operation Details
On Wednesday, January 21, authorities received information about suspects operating at a Richards Bay fuel station. The suspects reportedly bumped into victims, creating a distraction to steal cellphones before fleeing the scene. Security footage identified the individuals as being linked to similar robberies in multiple areas of KwaZulu-Natal.
Following the initial report, the group was observed at a fast-food restaurant in Richards Bay, where additional cellphones were stolen from patrons. Operational teams mobilized and located a vehicle matching the description traveling on the N2 highway.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects fled at high speed, heading south before exiting toward Umdloti. A pursuit ensued, and the vehicle was successfully stopped, resulting in the apprehension of all four suspects.
Authorities confirmed the suspects were wearing the same clothing as seen in the earlier video footage. A search of the suspects and the vehicle yielded multiple cellphones, with two positively identified as stolen from the Richards Bay restaurant.
The suspects and the vehicle have been handed over to Richards Bay SAPS for further investigation. Preliminary investigations suggest the group may be connected to numerous common robbery cases reported in Richards Bay, Umhlali, Verulam, KwaDukuza, Pinetown, and Durban North.
This operation demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between private security, specialized investigation units, and the South African Police Service in addressing organized robbery syndicates operating throughout the province. Investigations are ongoing to link the suspects to additional cases.
