Shein Posts First-Quarter Loss Amid Trade Costs Ahead of Hong Kong IPO

Fast-fashion giant Shein posted a $99 million net loss in the first quarter of 2026, driven by slowing sales, higher trade costs, and a one-time accounting charge, just as the company prepares for a planned Hong Kong initial public offering following approval from Chinese regulators earlier in the month.

First-Quarter Losses and the Hong Kong IPO Path

Shein reported a sharp financial reversal in the opening months of 2026, posting a $99 million net loss compared to a $395 million profit during the same period last year. According to a pre-IPO filing released on a Sunday, the Singapore-headquartered retailer was weighed down by slowing sales, higher trade costs, and a $328 million fair-value accounting adjustment tied to convertible redeemable preferred shares that fluctuate before a public listing.

The filing arrives as Shein pushes forward with its Hong Kong initial public offering. The company secured approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) earlier in the month, though management has not yet disclosed the offering size, pricing, expected proceeds, or listing schedule.

U.S. Tariffs and European Trade Pressures

The financial slide follows sweeping regulatory shifts in Shein’s core international markets. Business pressures intensified after the United States eliminated the de minimis import duty exemption for packages valued below $800. Since May 2025, Chinese-made goods shipped to the U.S. have faced tariffs ranging from 10% to 87.5%, compelling the fast-fashion company to raise prices.

U.S. revenue dropped 14.3% year-over-year to $2.04 billion, reducing the American market’s share to 22.5% of total revenue. Meanwhile, Europe—which generated roughly one-third of Shein’s 2025 revenue—faces similar hurdles after the European Union introduced a €3 fee on low-value e-commerce imports. Company disclosures warn that the European slowdown could ultimately match or exceed the drop experienced in the U.S.

Financial Context and Annual Results

The broader fiscal picture for the retailer shows moderating growth alongside climbing expenses. For the full year 2025, Shein’s revenue increased 8% to $41.85 billion, while net income declined 38.7% to $2.06 billion due to weaker consumer demand and rising operating costs. The first-quarter operating margin also narrowed to 2.9% from 3.9% a year earlier.

Amid ongoing public scrutiny regarding labor practices, environmental sustainability, and supply chain transparency, Shein maintains that it operates under a zero-tolerance policy on labor abuses. The company intends to direct its upcoming IPO proceeds toward strengthening technology, expanding its global footprint, boosting brand awareness, and supporting corporate responsibility initiatives, with Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and JPMorgan serving as joint sponsors for the Hong Kong listing.
