Sheinbaum urges UN to ‘prevent bloodshed’ after Trump orders Venezuela blockade | World news

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has called on the United Nations to intervene in Venezuela to “prevent any bloodshed,” as the United States increases pressure on the South American country with a blockade of oil tankers.

Mexico Urges UN Action Amid Venezuela Tensions

Sheinbaum stated that the United Nations has been “conspicuously absent” and must “assume its role to prevent any bloodshed and to always seek the peaceful resolution of conflicts,” following Washington’s announcement of a blockade targeting “sanctioned oil tankers” entering or leaving Venezuela.

The United States has been building a significant military presence in the Caribbean, citing efforts to combat Latin American drug trafficking. Caracas, however, views this operation as a campaign to oust leftist President Nicolás Maduro – whom the US and other nations consider illegitimate – and to seize Venezuelan oil reserves.

Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, and despite years of mismanagement and corruption, oil exports remain the country’s primary source of revenue.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico rejects “foreign interference” regardless of opinions regarding Maduro’s leadership. “We call for dialogue and peace to be used in any international dispute, and not intervention. That is our position by conviction and by our constitution,” she said.

Sheinbaum offered Mexico as a potential location for negotiations between Venezuela and the US, and called for de-escalation. “The entire world must ensure that there is no intervention and that there is a peaceful solution,” she added.

China Expresses Support for Venezuela

China also voiced its support for Venezuela, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi stating that Beijing opposes “unilateral bullying” and supports countries in safeguarding their sovereignty. China is a major buyer of Venezuelan crude, purchasing approximately 80% of its exports, though this accounts for only 4% of China’s total crude imports.

Last week, US forces seized a tanker in the Caribbean Sea carrying Venezuelan oil for Cuba and China.

Chile’s president-elect José Antonio Kast indicated he would support efforts to end Maduro’s “dictatorship,” further expanding support for the US position in the region. The US military has also been conducting operations in Ecuador, with US air force personnel deployed to the Pacific port city of Manta for a “temporary operation” with the Ecuadorian air force.

The US military reported that strikes on three alleged drug-trafficking vessels in the eastern Pacific killed eight people on Monday. Since early September, the US military has targeted alleged drug-smuggling boats, destroying at least 26 vessels and killing at least 95 people.
