In 1776, American forces under Gen. George Washington defeated Hessian mercenary troops fighting for the British at the Battle of Trenton, N.J., after crossing the Delaware River on Christmas night.

Jack Johnson made history in 1908, becoming the first Black American to win the world heavyweight boxing title with a 14th-round knockout of Tommy Burns in Australia.
