A 58-year-old woman died after falling from a hotel balcony in downtown Toronto on Sunday afternoon, prompting an investigation by the province’s police watchdog.
Toronto Police Investigating Woman’s Fall
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Toronto police responded to a disturbance call at a hotel near Colborne and Yonge Streets around 1 p.m. Sunday.
Upon arrival, officers were informed the woman had returned to her hotel room. They proceeded to the unit, and shortly after, were alerted to the fall.
“A short time later, the officers were made aware that the woman had fallen from the balcony of the unit. She was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the SIU stated.
The SIU is withholding information regarding the floor from which the woman fell and details about the specific unit to protect the privacy of the investigation.
According to the SIU, officers did not enter the woman’s room prior to the incident.
Toronto police have deferred all further inquiries to the SIU.
The SIU is requesting anyone with information, including video or photographic evidence, to come forward.
The SIU is an independent agency responsible for investigating potential misconduct of police and law enforcement officials resulting in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
