The rocket component originates from a January 15, 2025, launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Its primary mission succeeded in propelling two commercial lunar landers—Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost and ispace’s Hakuto-R Mission 2—toward Earth’s nearest neighbor. Following deployment, the upper stage lacked sufficient propellant to execute a controlled atmospheric reentry or maneuver into a deep-space graveyard orbit, leaving it to tumble erratically through an elliptical Earth-Moon orbit until gravitational forces set it on its current collision course.
