More than 200 trains between Madrid and the southern Andalucia region – including services to Cordoba, Seville, and Granada – have been cancelled on Monday, according to Spanish broadcaster RTVE.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has cancelled his schedule for the day following the incident, his office stated.
- Approximately 400 passengers were onboard the two trains, primarily Spaniards returning from the weekend.
- The cause of the crash remains unknown, according to Spanish transport minister Oscar Puente.
- Rescuers were seen pulling passengers from twisted carriages and providing aid at the scene.
Video shared on social media depicted rescuers extracting passengers from damaged carriages under floodlights. Some passengers exited through broken windows, while others were transported on stretchers.
The area where the crash occurred is reportedly difficult to access. Local residents provided blankets and water to assist the victims, according to María Belén Moya Rojas, the regional Civil Protection chief.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her concern, stating she was following “the terrible news” from Córdoba and sending her thoughts to those affected.
Salvador Jiménez, a journalist with state-run broadcaster RTVE who was on board the train to Madrid, shared images showing a rear carriage lying on its side with evacuated passengers nearby.
