UK Sports Venues Enter a New Era: Fan Experience Takes Center Stage
The landscape of UK sports and entertainment venues is undergoing a dramatic transformation, driven by ambitious redevelopment projects and a renewed focus on enhancing the fan experience. From the groundbreaking Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool to the revitalized Craven Cottage in London, a wave of innovation is reshaping how fans engage with live events.
Everton Football Club’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, completed last August, represents a landmark moment for the club and the city. Simultaneously, Fulham’s Riverside revamp breathed new life into the historic Craven Cottage. These projects are not isolated incidents; they are part of a broader trend sweeping across UK football, cricket, and rugby, with venues like Lord’s and Twickenham also planning or undergoing significant upgrades. Teams are strategically investing in their facilities to unlock new revenue streams and deliver greater value to both local communities and businesses.
Declan Sharkey, Global Director and Senior Principal at Populous, emphasizes a crucial shift: the reaffirmation of sports venues as “civic architecture.” This concept suggests a move beyond simply hosting events to creating spaces that serve as community hubs and cultural landmarks. Populous has been instrumental in designing some of the world’s most iconic sporting venues.
However, despite these advancements, the core elements of a memorable sporting experience remain paramount. According to the Sport Industry Report survey, the ‘general atmosphere’ resonated most strongly with fans (43%) and industry professionals (63%). The ‘quality of the game itself’ was also highly valued, chosen by 42% of fans and 61% of professionals. Ultimately, great venues provide the stage for unforgettable events.
A Grander Day Out: Elevating the Fan Experience
Beyond the on-field action, fans increasingly prioritize convenience and safety. Over 30% of fans and 41% of professionals identified ease of access and egress as key factors in their matchday experience, while 37% of fans highlighted the importance of safety and security. These foundational elements are non-negotiable for a positive experience.
While the “festivalisation” of events – incorporating fan zones, music, and entertainment – isn’t a top priority for everyone (16% of fans, 21% of professionals), there’s clear appetite for enhancements. Nearly half of industry professionals (46%) believe fan zones and music would encourage greater attendance, while over a quarter of fans (27%) and professionals (25%) desire food options that reflect local cuisine. Social games like darts and mini-golf also appeal to 25% of fans, suggesting a desire for more interactive experiences.

Innovation focused on directly serving the fan is proving more popular than technology for its own sake. Over 30% of both fans and professionals expressed interest in ordering food and drink to their seats via smartphones, while enthusiasm for automated concessions was significantly lower (15% and 16% respectively). This highlights a preference for convenience and personalized service.
Setting the Standard: Iconic Venues and Global Inspiration
Despite the ongoing evolution of the live event landscape, certain venues consistently stand out as benchmarks of excellence. When asked to identify facilities representing UK sport on an international stage, professionals overwhelmingly chose Wimbledon (37%), while fans favored Wembley Stadium (36%).
Wembley Stadium is also widely expected to maintain its iconic status for decades to come, with 75% of fans and 86% of professionals predicting its continued relevance in 20 years. This enduring appeal speaks to the power of history, tradition, and architectural significance.

Industry professionals are actively looking abroad for inspiration. The Las Vegas Sphere (45%) and Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium (45%) were identified as venues offering valuable lessons for UK operators, followed by the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles (33%). Fans also highlighted the Bernabéu (20%) as a source of innovation. Real Madrid’s stadium redevelopment showcases a commitment to cutting-edge technology and fan experience.
What role do you believe technology should play in enhancing the live sporting experience? And how can venues better balance tradition with innovation to appeal to a wider audience?
