Starmer: Trump, Israel & Iran – No Special Relationship

Keir Starmer defended the UK’s response to the conflict in the Middle East, stating that aligning with President Trump’s “latest words” is not the foundation of the special relationship with the United States. The comments came after criticism from Kemi Badenoch, the opposition leader, regarding the UK’s decision not to launch offensive strikes against Iran.

PMQs Clash Over UK’s Stance

During a contentious Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Badenoch repeatedly questioned Starmer’s decision to refrain from directly striking Iranian missile bases, asking why the UK wasn’t taking action its allies were undertaking. Starmer responded by emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the widespread concern over potential escalation, particularly regarding the impact on energy prices and the safety of civilians and military personnel in the region.

Starmer explained that he would not commit the UK to war without a lawful basis and a well-defined plan. Badenoch countered that the US had been forced to destroy Iranian bases that launched drones at a British base in Cyprus, arguing that the UK was “catching arrows rather than stopping the archer.” She also pressed Starmer on why additional defense spending hadn’t been allocated.

Evacuations and Military Deployments

The first charter flight evacuating British nationals from the Middle East departed Oman at 11pm local time (7pm UK time), with two more flights planned. Over 1,000 British nationals had already returned to the UK as of Tuesday, with eight commercial flights scheduled to arrive today.

Starmer confirmed that British military deployments have been underway for weeks, in coordination with the US. He stated that British forces are actively protecting US lives, with American planes operating from British bases. “British jets are shooting down drones and missiles to protect American lives in the Middle East on our joint bases,” he said. “That is the special relationship in action.”

Deployed British military resources include radar systems, ground-based air defenses, counter-drone systems, and fighter jets. Wildcat helicopters equipped with anti-drone capabilities are expected in Cyprus this week, and HMS Dragon is slated for deployment to the Mediterranean.

A suspected Iranian drone struck the British base at Akrotiri on Sunday, causing minimal damage and no casualties. Two additional drones targeting Akrotiri were intercepted on Monday, with another alert reported on Wednesday morning.

Economic Concerns and Government Response

Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, met with oil and gas companies on Wednesday to address the volatility in prices resulting from the conflict. The prime minister’s spokesperson reiterated that any decisions made will prioritize Britain’s national interests and the safety of its citizens.
