U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly mocked British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, deriding his leadership and questioning the UK’s alliance with the United States following disagreements over military action. The remarks, delivered during an Easter lunch speech, have prompted concerns about a further deterioration in UK-US relations.
Trump’s Derisive Remarks
Trump appeared to imitate Starmer in a weak voice, criticizing the prime minister for consulting his team before making decisions about military deployments. He specifically referenced a request for UK aircraft carriers, stating, “I said: ‘You have two, old broken-down aircraft carriers, do you think you could send them over?’ ‘Ohhh, I’ll have to ask my team.’ I said: ‘You’re the prime minister, you don’t have to.’”
The president claimed the UK “should be our best” ally but had not been during the recent conflict involving Iran. He also mocked French President Emmanuel Macron, claiming his wife “treats him extremely badly.”
Downing Street Response and Diplomatic Concerns
Downing Street sources stated that Trump had never requested the aircraft carriers and that the UK had not offered them. Previously, Trump had claimed Starmer consulted his team about sending minesweepers, not aircraft carriers.
Diplomatic figures have acknowledged the damage to the relationship, with one senior diplomat stating Starmer was right to “essentially ignore” Trump and should focus on strengthening ties with Canada, Australia, and mainland Europe. Another former diplomat suggested the upcoming visits by King Charles and potentially Prince William and Kate may offer opportunities to improve relations, but cautioned that the situation was precarious.
Political Reactions
Labour ministers and MPs have expressed strong support for Starmer’s approach of remaining calm in the face of Trump’s criticism. Some believe his handling of the situation strengthens his position as leader. Emily Thornberry, Labour MP and chair of the foreign affairs committee, stated she was “glad we have a leader in the UK who works with a team and listens to experts.”
Robert Jenrick, a Reform UK MP, acknowledged the relationship had “taken a massive blow – probably irreparably so,” while also stating he did not defend Trump’s conduct. He expressed concern that the UK prime minister should be “respected” on the world stage.
Starmer’s Stance
Starmer has maintained his focus on the UK’s national interest, stating he would remain “laser focused” on that principle despite external pressure. He affirmed his commitment to making difficult decisions and prioritizing the needs of the country.
Trump’s remarks were initially released on a social media channel by the White House before being deleted, but were subsequently downloaded and republished by a reporter for Business Insider.
