Actor Steve Buscemi has joined the cast of FX’s television adaptation of the Far Cry video game franchise. He will star alongside Rob Mac and Lizzy Caplan in the upcoming anthology series, which is being produced by FX Productions under the guidance of creators Noah Hawley and Mac.
Expansion of the Far Cry Anthology Cast
The addition of Steve Buscemi to the project, first reported this week, marks a significant casting milestone for the series, which was officially greenlit at FX in November 2025. Buscemi joins a production that features It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob Mac and Lizzy Caplan. While FX has confirmed the casting, the network has maintained strict confidentiality regarding the specific characters the actors will portray.

The series will utilize an anthology format, a structure that mirrors the long-running video game franchise. According to Deadline, this approach allows each season to feature a distinct setting and a fresh cast of characters. This creative decision mirrors the structure of the games, which have released six main entries and five spinoffs since the series debuted in 2004.
Noah Hawley and Rob Mac’s Production Strategy
The show is being developed by executive producers Noah Hawley and Rob Mac. Hawley, known for his work on the Fargo television series, brings a history of adapting established intellectual property to the network. As The Hollywood Reporter noted, Buscemi’s involvement reunites him with the world of Fargo; he starred in the original 1996 film by the Coen brothers, while Hawley later created the FX anthology series inspired by that film.
Production is being handled through the creators’ respective banners: Hawley’s 26 Keys and Mac’s More Better Productions. The series is produced by FX Productions and will be available on FX, Hulu, and Disney+ internationally. While TheWrap reported that the show will take inspiration from the games’ storytelling style, FX has not yet clarified whether the series will adapt a specific game narrative or treat the game world as a broader creative jumping-off point.
Steve Buscemi’s Television and Film Pedigree
Most recently, Buscemi appeared in the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday. His resume also includes credits on TBS’s Miracle Workers
and guest roles on shows such as 30 Rock
and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
As Collider highlighted, the actor remains one of the most prolific performers in the industry, with an upcoming role in Martin McDonagh’s feature film Wild Horse Nine.

Franchise Context and Future Outlook
The Far Cry franchise, owned by Ubisoft, has reached over 100 million unique players since its inception. The most recent installment, Far Cry 6, was released in 2021. With the television adaptation currently in the casting phase, industry observers are looking to see if the series will follow the path of other successful game-to-screen transitions. While the show is billed as a limited series, FX has already confirmed plans for multiple seasons, contingent upon the performance of the first season on Hulu.
The production team remains extensive, including Simon Emanuel, Emilia Serrano, Nicholas Frenkel, Monica Macer, Peter Calloway, John Campisi, and representatives from Ubisoft Film & Television, including Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill.
