Dozens of protesters rallied in Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, last Thursday, calling for international aid as communities grapple with widespread devastation. The demonstrations featured white flags – traditionally a symbol of surrender – used as a plea for global solidarity.
Aceh Protests Highlight Urgent Need for Aid
A young girl at the rally held a sign reading, “I am just three years old, I want to grow up in a safe and sustainable world.” The white flags have appeared across the province on damaged rooftops, along eroded riverbanks, and outside mosques.
“The flags do not mean we are giving in. They are a distress signal to grab the attention of friends outside, to let them know the conditions in Aceh today are very bad,” said protester Husnul Khawatinnissa.
Entire villages have been destroyed, and damage to roads and infrastructure has isolated many communities. Survivors are reporting sickness and starvation.
“How long more do we have to wash ourselves in mud and floodwaters,” shouted demonstrator Nurmi Ali.
Provincial authorities have requested support from the United Nations, with the Aceh governor stating he welcomes assistance “from anyone, anywhere.”
The national government reports that relief efforts are underway “on a national scale,” with 60 trillion rupiah ($3.6 billion USD) allocated for reconstruction.
